New study on the cult of Mithras in Aquincum

Several members of the research group published a detailed synthesis on the cult of Mithras in Aquincum in the latest number of the journal of the Romanian National Museum (Cercetari Arheologice) . As one of the richest urban settlements in Mithraic finds in the Danubian provinces, Aquincum represents a central case study of our research group together with several other major urban centres, such as Apulum, Sarmizegetusa, Poetovio and Carnuntum. Several important studies on the cult of Mithras in Aquincum were already published in the last two decades by Paula Zsidi (1,2) and the team excavating the 6th Mithraeum since 2023.

Members of the research group already published several studies on Roman Mithras in urban context (especially in Apulum and Sarmizegetusa) and many more will follow in the next years: case studies focusing on research history, reception history, art history, biography of individual objects and monuments as case studies of religious glocalisation and religious appropriation.
